We are often asked what the difference is between a coach and a mentor. Yvonne Matzk, Leadership and Channel coach, joins Sam and Vic to share why she has become a coach and why everyone should have a mentor.
Sam asks Yvonne why she does what she does. We love Yvonne’s response to this,
“The most rewarding role when you become a leader is to see other people shine, grow, and develop. It’s not about you anymore, it’s about them.”
Yvonne is another Simon Sinek fan. If you haven’t discovered his book “Start with why,” it is well worth a read.
So, what’s the difference between a coach and a mentor?
Yvonne gave a great explanation on the differences. Both help, support, and nurture but they each have a slightly different approach.
“The easiest way to explain it – a mentor is where you give someone advice based on your knowledge and experience. You’re pushing information onto someone. In that scenario you’re giving them a fish.
With coaching you’re teaching them to fish. You’re asking really great questions. You’re using techniques and skills that you’ve learnt to pull the information from somebody. Most of the time they know they answer but haven’t got to the solution yet. You’re helping people to think differently.”
Yvonne shares how the new mentoring network she has brought to the channel in the UK is really gathering momentum and how you can get involved. Maybe with the help of this podcast we can extend the scope outside of the UK?
