Team Coaching vs Personal Development: Why the Difference Matters for Business Success

It’s been an interesting few weeks. We’re on the cusp of transforming our business, and that’s meant getting out and speaking with even more tech leaders than usual. Why? Because we want to understand if our vision (to change how it feels to work in the tech industry) can truly scale and become reality.

Through those conversations it became clear that team coaching isn’t something most people have experienced. Executive coaching? Yes. Personal development? Yes. But coaching the team as a whole to build trust, alignment, and get everyone pulling in the same direction? That’s a concept still flying under the radar.

And yet the people stuff is still the hardest part. With ever increasing performance pressure, remote teams, and fewer chances to learn from each other day to day, we’re all juggling more complexity than ever.

If you’ve been thrown in at the deep end to lead a team, this hits even harder.

It can feel like being handed the wheel without a map.

And it reaffirms why our mission matters.

We help tech organisations execute at speed. We do this by helping teams work at their best, together. That means you have relationships built on trust, are aligned, focused, and free of friction.

It starts with purpose, trust, clarity, and simplicity. That’s our formula. It’s not rocket science but it’s easier said than done. When these elements are optimised, teams are more agile, collaborate better, and deliver faster business outcomes.

This formula bridges the gap between the human and business elements.

But none of this happens by focusing on individuals alone.

That’s why we often find ourselves explaining the difference between personal development and team coaching. Both are valuable, but they serve very different purposes. Understanding the difference can be the turning point between a team that accelerates and one that stalls.

Personal Development: Building Individuals

Personal development focuses on individual growth, building confidence, sharpening communication, and strengthening operational skill sets. These are important building blocks for everyone.

But even the most skilled individuals can’t succeed alone.

You wouldn’t coach a football team by training each player on their own and hoping they click together on match day. Great teams need more than individual talent. That’s what team coaching delivers.

Jake Humphrey recently posed the question on LinkedIn: Would Sir Alex Ferguson be successful in today’s world of elite sport? Jake thinks he would btw . . . but only if he evolved from command-and-control leadership to one built on connection and emotional intelligence. We can see the best business leaders making that same shift.

Because high performance isn’t built on fear or hierarchy.

Team Coaching: From Talented Individuals to High-Performing Teams

Team coaching focuses on the Team Operating System, not just the parts.

It unlocks your collective performance as a group of individuals. It gives teams the structure, rhythm, and language you need to thrive, helping you pull in the same direction with clarity and urgency.

That’s your real advantage.

A great example of this in action comes from Harvey Smith, VP Partners. In a recent podcast episode, Harvey shares how adopting a team coaching approach helped align partner teams across EMEA around shared goals and values, with lasting results.

Why Team Coaching Is a Must-Have

Team coaching is no longer a “nice to have.” It’s a strategic necessity. For individuals. For teams. And for the business.

Even if your team is currently in a good place, we’ve seen how quickly that experience can unravel. Teams are fragile. You need conscious care and attention to stay strong.

A Simple, Proven Approach

As an authorised partner, we use Patrick Lencioni’s Five Behaviors® model as a foundation. It’s simple, practical, and incredibly effective.

When layered with our purpose-trust-clarity-simplicity formula and the Team Speed Check, it becomes a complete system marrying the human and business elements to help teams operate at pace, break down silos, and deliver sustained business results.

Our Team Speed Check is a diagnostic tool that identifies both the bright spots and blind spots in how your team operates. This means your time, money, and energy are spent where they’ll make the biggest difference. Because teams in the tech industry don’t have time to waste.

As the authors of Trillion Dollar Coach wisely capture from Bill Campbell:

Work the team, then the problem.”
